Geocaching Montreal Geo-Rallye 2008 - GC1953F

Last saturday, in Montreal, Incomer and Bugsyves organized a geo-rallye. For those of you who don’t know what geo-caching is, read this text that explains it. The rallye consisted of about 13 teams of 4 or 5 people that had a series of geo-caches to find, and lots of very tricky clues to solve.

I had volunteered to help with the Rallye instead of being part of one of the teams. My job was to play a homeless man, in downtown Montreal. I was essentially sitting on a LARGE cache that was covered in a blanket. A Teammate, (Narquois) who was in the park across the street would give me a sign when geocachers were heading my way. At this point I would pretend to sleep, on the cache, and wait for one of them to decide to wake me (in hopes that I was in fact part of the game). I had a cardboard sign next to me that said (in french) “Need 20$ for a steak please” that I only put out when the geocachers where near. It was very fun listening to the team members debating if I was in fact sitting on the cache, and if I was part of the game or just bad luck on their part that I was sitting there. I didn’t make it easy either I must admit.

At every cache, in the logbook, there was a riddle that the teams needed to answer. The answers to the riddles were a big part of how the points were calculated in the end. To access the cache that I was sitting on, the players would need to supply me with a password. (After they managed to “wake me up” that is) The password was found at the previous cache and was Heide’67 - As per my instructions, if they didn’t have the apostrophe, they didn’t have access to the cache. A lot of people had to walk that kilometer back to the previous cache to get the correct password. :)

All in all, the geo rally went very well, and people seemed happy with it. Although they weren’t so happy when I had to tell them they didn’t have the right password. :) The rallye involved A LOT of walking, and to be very observant of everything going on. At the end we all met at a Hall that was rented by Bugsyves and Incomer, and they gave out the scores and TONS of door prizes. A big thanks to AV Design for contributing to those. You can see the log entries from the geo-rallye here, althouth they’re in french…

Bugsyves made a Youtube Video from pictures taken during the event. You can view it here !

I will add pictures as I get them, the only ones I have so far were taken by AV Design :

That’s hilarious! I must admit you look fairly convincing as a homeless dude with that sad look on your face. Did anyone spare you any change?

Yeah one of the teams “woke me up” and the first thing the guy did was go through his pockets and give me a buck. Then I asked what it was for, he said he had some questions, I looked around at everyone and said WHAT, and then he asked about the geocaching at which point I was allowed to ask him for the password and give up my identity as a geocacher in disguise. :) (I also gave him back his buck)

No one that wasn’t playing the game tried to give me change though, but I didn’t look at anyone that passed by .. I was too afraid someone might recognize me… :) Although when I did look at the people passing by, all I got was a quick glance at me, then an even quicker look away. The whole day, ONE person (from Vermont) smiled at me.. (With the exception of the people playing the game that is)

I’m a big fan of anything to do with GPS and mapping, and have been doing a lot of reading about Geocaching lately, only to find that its something that is pretty interesting to me. If you read my about page you’d see that in my past bloggi…
